Overview

GIULIO CESARE PART 1: THE DEATH OF POMPEY

Giulio Cesare is Handel’s most celebrated opera: a thrilling story of passion and revenge featuring a treasure trove of great arias of immense dramatic intensity.

The opera follows the events surrounding Julius Caesar’s conquest of Egypt, as well as his uneasy alliance and then romance with fabled Egyptian queen Cleopatra.

English Touring Opera is presenting this 4-hour masterpiece as two separate shows, The Death of Pompey and Cleopatra’s Needle: either makes for a great night out, so book for just one if this is your first baroque experience, or book for both to hear every note in the score.

In Part 1, a small group of top-ranking Romans find their lives turned upside down in Egypt, while Cleopatra and her brother fight to the death for the throne, using their visitors as pawns. The evening ends with Cleopatra’s unmissable aria, Se pietà di me non senti, which is also repeated at the start of Part 2 for those people only attending the second show.
