Sand in the Sandwiches

Overview

Following an acclaimed sell-out run at Chichester Festival Theatre, Edward Fox returns to Bath with his acclaimed portrayal of John Betjeman, poet laureate and one of the bestloved poets of the 20th century.

Sand in the Sandwiches celebrates a man famous not only for light verse and laughter, but for his passions, his sense of purpose and his unforgettable poetry. When his Collected Poems came out in 1958 they made publishing history and have since sold over two and a quarter million copies.

Edward Fox stars in this joyous play, bringing Betjeman’s poetry, sharp wit and vivacious personality to life.

Embracing his delight for nostalgia and delicious irreverence, Sand in the Sandwiches travels through Betjeman’s boyhood and adolescence to life as Poet Laureate, a position he held from 1972-1984, presenting a hugely entertaining insight into this national treasure.

Double BAFTA winner Edward Fox is one of this country’s most eminent actors. His distinguished career includes the iconic British films The Day of the Jackal, A Bridge Too Far and Oh! What a Lovely War and television credits include Edward and Mrs Simpson (for which he won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor) and A Dance to the Music of Time.

Emmy Award winning writer Hugh Whitemore’s celebrated works for the stage and screen include Stevie, Pack of Lies and Breaking the Code.
