The Genius of Jane Austen - Her Love of Theatre and Why She is a Hit in Hollywood

With Paula Byrne

8 September 2017

With Paula Byrne

With Paula Byrne

Austen expert and author of The Real Jane Austen, Paula Byrne (in Bath last year with Kick) looks at adaptations of Austen’s novels from A.A.Milne’s Miss Elizabeth Bennet to modern classics, including the BBC's Pride and Prejudice and Persuasion, Emma Thompson’s Sense and Sensibility, and Clueless, Jane’s World.

This revised edition of Paula’s first book Jane Austen and the Theatre, features Austen’s love of farce and comic theatre, her sometimes filthy juvenilia and how these aspects of her writing lend the novels to adaptation by film, TV and theatre. She presents an Austen not of prim manners and genteel calm, but filled with wild comedy and outrageous behaviour.
