The Libertine

Overview

Dominic Cooper plays debauched 17th Century rake the Earl of Rochester in this sexually charged masterpiece by award-winning playwright Stephen Jeffreys. The Libertine opens in Bath prior to a West End run at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.

John Wilmot, the second Earl of Rochester is a charismatic poet, playwright and rake with a legendary appetite for excess. Yet this most ardent of hedonists is forced to reconsider everything he thinks and feels when a chance encounter with an actress at the Playhouse sends him reeling.

With flair and wit, this wild romp through 1670s London offers an incisive critique of life in an age of excess.

Dominic Cooper’s notable stage credits include the National Theatre productions of The History Boys, Mother Clap’s Molly House and Phedre, alongside Helen Mirren. His numerous film credits include The History Boys, The Duchess, My Week with Marilyn, Mamma Mia, Captain America: The First Avenger and he is currently starring in Preacher.

Jasper Britton has most recently appeared in Richard II, The Jew of Malta and Henry IV Parts 1 & 2 for the RSC at Stratford, The Barbican and New York; Mark Hadfield starred in Mrs Henderson Presents in the 2015 Summer Season in Bath; Will Merrick's television credits include Brief Encounter and Skins.

Terry Johnson is the winner of numerous awards, including the Tony Award for Best Director of a Musical 2010 and the Olivier Award for Best Musical Revival for La Cage Aux Folles.

Presented in association with TRH Productions and Ilene Starger.
