Charles Spencer

January 1649 - a young Charles II is running for his life, a vast price on his head, to escape the men who had beheaded his father and wanted him dead.

Thousands died as the Royalist forces were crushed by the might of Cromwell’s armies but the prince escaped. For the next six weeks he used disguise and deception and relied on grit, fortitude and good luck.

In this gripping, action-packed, true story, historian Charles Spencer uses the account Charles relaid to Samuel Pepys and many others to retell this epic tale.

Charles Spencer’s books include Killers of the King and Blenheim: Battle for Europe which was shortlisted for National Book Awards History Book of the Year 2005.
