Theatre Royal Bath staff to receive Mayor’s Access Challenge Award

On Tuesday 21st February at 2.30pm, the Mayor of Bath (Councillor Paul Crossley) and Access Bath & North East Somerset are set to present staff from the Theatre Royal Bath the Mayor of Bath's Access Challenge Award in recognition of a positive contribution in providing accessible services to disabled customers.

Nominations for the Access Challenge Award were sought last October, as publicised in the Bath Chronicle.  The successful nomination was made by Mr and Mrs Dawson, who regularly attend the Theatre Royal and use the disabled facilities.

The annual Mayor’s Access Challenge Award, run by the Bath & North East Somerset Access Group, recognises businesses and public places in Bath that have improved access for people with disabilities, either through physical building work or service provision.

In their letter of nomination, Mr and Mrs Dawson highlighted the care taken by the Theatre Royal Bath to ensure that all three auditoria and front of house facilities are accessible for theatregoers with disabilities. In addition to the long-standing wheelchair spaces, a reduced ticket price for disabled patrons, provision of a hearing loop and inclusion of signed and audio described performances throughout the year, they also praised the installation of a new lift for access in the main house foyer in 2010 and the care and professionalism of the Theatre Royal’s Front of House staff.

Mr. Dawson, who nominated the Theatre Royal Bath, said, “On a personal level, as a wheelchair user, the theatre has been a life saver to me.   The entertainment provided by the high quality shows plus the kindness of the staff make this my main interest in life.”

The Mayor will be presenting representatives from the Theatre Royal’s staff with the award in the Mayor’s Parlour at Bath’s Guildhall on Tuesday 21st February at 2.30 pm.
