The story of Sweeney Todd first appeared on the stage in 1847, as a melodrama at the Britannia Theatre in the east end of London. The String of Pearls, as it was originally called, was based on a popular “penny dreadful” serialised story.
Opera della Luna, returning after January's HMS Pinafore, recreate that original melodramatic production, restoring the musical element of sensational story telling with an orchestra of eleven musicians, and music penned by British opera composers of the Victorian age. The production was seen last year in London and gained four and five star reviews including being voted Best Show by The Times
Come and be shocked, terrified, and amazed, and most important of all, hiss the villain – the notorious Fiend of Fleet Street!
★★★★★ “A bloody good time” Reviews Hub
★★★★ “Gruesomely funny... even more popular in its day than Sondheim’s is in ours. After seeing this riotously funny production by Jeff Clarke’s Opera della Luna company you understand why”
