Pete the badger likes everything to be neat and tidy: the flowers, the leaves, even the other animals. But, when autumn comes, he gets a little bit carried away with cleaning up the forest and accidently destroys his own home!
Based on the much-loved children’s book by author and illustrator, Emily Gravett, Tidy is a gentle but cautionary tale about the value of the world around us and what happens if we don’t look after it.
With beautiful puppets, original music and a touch of silliness, this playful story will delight young audiences, as it explores how everyone needs a little bit of wild chaos in their lives.
We know live performance can be overwhelming for some children, particularly if they don’t like loud noises or unexpected events. Below are details of some of the key moments during the performance of Tidy.
· Tidy is a 50 minute show about a badger who loves tidying-up, but accidently destroys his own home.
· The show is set in the woods, where Pete the badger and the other animals live. Some of the action takes places in the evening or during the night. Therefore, the lighting is quite dark in places, but it never goes completely dark, apart from a short moment at the very end.
· Pete uses a hoover to clean the forest – it makes a long, whirring sound. The actors talk a louder during this bit so that you can still hear them.
· During Pete’s cleaning routine he uses a whistle. This can be quite loud, but doesn’t last for long.
· Pete the badger, Rabbit and Fox all eat worms and make loud chewing noises. Don’t worry though, they're just jelly sweets!
· When Pete decides to cut down trees, there are loud, dramatic noises and red lights to show the destruction. This section includes the use of a small, pretend chainsaw.
· During this section you will also hear the sound of diggers, mixers, and all sorts of other machinery noises. This includes lots of clanging and banging, as well as some high-pitched screeches.
· During the flood scene, there is the sound of rushing water and puppets bobbing around to show they are in water. After the flood, there are lots of sucking and slurping mud noises when they clean up. It might sound a bit icky, but it's all part of the story!
· Later in the show, the animals have a tea break with lots of exaggerated eating and drinking sounds.
· There's a short section with some thunder and rain sounds, and some blue flashing lights to make it look like a storm.
· The actors might chat with the audience a bit, but you absolutely don't have to join in if you don't want to. It's totally fine to just sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.
We really hope this guide helps you have a fantastic time watching Tidy and to help you feel more prepared. And remember, if things get a bit too much at any point, it's okay to pop out for a quick break.
