This imaginative and delightfully playful new production of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Into the Woods arrives as a timely celebration of the late composer’s remarkable impact on musical theatre.
The supremely talented ensemble cast includes Julian Bleach (co-creator of Olivier Award-winning Shockheaded Peter, Doctor Who, The Borgias), Audrey Brisson (Olivier Award nominee for Amélie, Outlander), Nicola Hughes (Olivier Award nominee for Fosse and Porgy and Bess), Rhashan Stone (All About Eve, Noël Coward Theatre, Finding Alice, Horrible Histories) and Alex Young (Follies, National Theatre) alongside Gillian Bevan, Nathanael Campbell, Maria Conneely, Lauren Conroy, Phoebe Fildes, Samuel Holmes, Charlotte Jaconelli, Henry Jenkinson and Barney Wilkinson.
In this production, a young girl playing with her grandfather’s toy theatre imagines an upside down, fairy tale world. A baker and his wife must set out to reverse a curse which has left them childless and hunt down four magical items to lift the spell. On the way, they meet Little Red Riding Hood (plus a captivating Wolf), Rapunzel and Cinderella, charming Princes (and the obligatory, less charming, Stepsisters), Jack (he of beanstalk fame) and, of course, a Witch.
A world-class creative team led by iconic stage and film director Terry Gilliam, and co-director and choreographer Leah Hausman, brings this magical tale to life. Together with designer Jon Bausor and costume designer Antony McDonald, their vision and design promises to create the most spectacular production ever staged at the Theatre Royal Bath.

Presented by Scenario Two and Theatre Royal Bath Productions, this eagerly anticipated production of INTO THE WOODS brings together a world-class, multi award-winning creative team including iconic stage and film director Terry Gilliam, co-director and choreographer Leah Hausman, designer Jon Bausor, costume designer Antony McDonald, video designer Will Duke, sound designer Paul Groothuis, and casting director David Grindrod.
Terry Gilliam is the surreal director and artist behind the iconic imagery of Monty Python’s Flying Circus. As a legendary film director, he is the recipient of a BAFTA Lifetime Achievement Award for a career which has included Monty Python and the Holy Grail, The Brothers Grimm, Brazil, Time Bandits, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and the Oscar-winning The Fisher King. He also directed the English National Opera’s acclaimed productions of The Damnation of Faust and Benvenuto Cellini.
Leah Hausman has choreographed extensively all over the world including for the Royal Opera House, where her credits have included Rigoletto, Die Zauberflöte, Le nozze di Figaro, Aida, Les Troyens and Elektra. She collaborated with Terry Gilliam on The Damnation of Faust and Benvenuto Cellini at The London Coliseum, and has also worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, The Old Vic, Chichester Festival, the Royal Court and many others.
