Our company of young actors and theatre-makers created their unique version of new Connections script SYCAMORE GAP, which they presented at the Bristol Old Vic in March 2026 and were chosen to perform again at The Lowry in Manchester in July 2026. Directed by Patrick Withey, a whodunnit about the felling of the Robin Hood Tree at Sycamore Gap. Set on the day after the felling, the local police are ‘in school’ conducting an investigation. The twelve members of the school’s eco-club are held in a classroom, being taken out and interviewed one by one, until the culprit cracks and confesses. While they wait for their turn, the pupils interrogate each other.

Written by Lara Lawman and devised by the company, The Aquarium was an immersive production that explores themes of nature, epic journeys, self-discovery and unique perspectives in our studio space.

At its heart, our telling of The Odyssey is about the meaning of home; how it feels to be kept away from the place that made you, where you feel safe and can be yourself, where your loved ones anxiously await your return. Inspired by Homers ancient Greek epic, the company voyages between myth and modernity, bringing the ancient tale crashing into the present through their collective imagination and unique perspectives.

Abridged by Aileen Gonsalves. Directed by Nell Bailey, an elemental surge of nature, magic, and manipulation, this production was an electrifying reimagining of the play The Tempest by William Shakespeare.

The Dickensian classics reimagined by young people for the modern stage. Dark Victorian streets illumined, forgotten characters uncovered, epic journeys reimagined. Join us for a showcase of work by our theatre school groups all celebrating and rediscovering the works of the beloved writer.
This performance featured four of the Theatre Royal Bath Theatre School groups on the Theatre Royal Bath main stage.

Directed by Nell Bailey and Patrick Withey, Summer Company 2025 delved into Shakespeare’s Midsummer’s Night Dream, adapted by Nell Bailey for a queer, inclusive, and accessible audience.

In the not so far future a group of teenagers are on the run! Living off the land, off grid in their own rubbish dump turned paradise. Can they elude the authorities forever? And what are the authorities so worried about anyway?

This Olivier Award-winning jukebox musical is a concoction of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, the 1956 motion picture Forbidden Planet and some of the most beloved 50’s and 60’s rock and roll classics. Good vibrations are guaranteed!

A new devised and immersive piece inspired by David Bowie’s lyrics. Performed in the Roper Room. Join us on an intergalactic glam rock adventure through the stars. An abandoned spaceship. A memory echoing through space and time. A final call for help or a message that could save humanity? Who was the Major, and what did he want us to know…?

Main House Festival A collection of murder mysteries presented by theatre school students in the Main House as part of autumn term 2024.

An immersive play Exploring the life of Mary Shelley and how she came to write Frankenstein. This was performed at the Mary Shelley’s House of Frankenstein Immersive museum. The audience was led throughout the house with each room featuring a different scene. Devised with a company of 15, 16 – 18-year-olds. The devising process was led by Steph Kempson and the show was directed by Alice Lamb.

A devised by inspired by Edgar Allen Poe’s writing. Devised with a company of 18, 9 – 12-year-old participants. Directed by Paddy and assisted by Anna. It performed in the Roper room which was transformed into an immersive space and made to look like an old attic.

A previous NT connections play. Had the largest creative team in the festival. Performed in the Egg Auditorium. Directed by Lex Kaby. There was a cast of 24 young people. Alex Heane composed original songs for this play. Designed by Ella Barraclough.

Written by Sam Kenyon-Hamp, with the help of the devising company. Directed by Olly Langdon with Kilter Theatre Company. Original concept and devising process included members of the Autumn 2022 Theatre School 11-13 group. Our version of The Selfish Giant takes place once all the grown-ups have somehow managed to erase themselves from the world & young people have taken charge. With this company, this creative initiative & our green book, the future is in good hands.

An updated version of David Lane’s original I am England, first performed by the youth theatre in 2013. Loosely based on Shakespeare’s Coriolanus and directed by Kate Pascoe with our 16-18 group.

Summer Company 2022, an edited reimagining of Lorca’s well-known play. Cast of 30 aged 12-18 and directed by previous Artistic Director, Sophie Jacobs-Wyburn.

April 2022 Commissioned script, a newly devised cop drama created by company members to investigate the story of the Pied Piper. Featuring 22 cast members aged 14-16, Directed by Jenny Davies.

Digital, interactive online thriller. Created remotely with creative technologists and a games writer. Received 4 stars in The Stage.

Summer Assembly 2020: Remote summer school that created sound design responses to locations in Bath. QR codes with an interactive map allowed audiences to experience their sound designs while standing in the locations they responded to. Utilising digital sound design, spoken word, soundscape and song, this project was completely online based, curated by Theatre School Directors and visiting artists.

Devised radio play due to be aired on BBC Radio Introducing and performed live with foley sound. Shut down due to the pandemic.

A promenade production of the well known Shakespeare, performed in the Main House’s 1805 dining rooms. Set in the 80s with a female Hamlet and designed by Sam Wilde. Due to inaccessibility of the 1805 rooms, the piece was professionally filmed in a one-take theatrical filming and was screened at The Little Cinema. Cast were aged 14-18.

Summer Company 2019. Commissioned script, written specifically for a cast of 30 aged 12-18 year olds. Set in a slum, in a war-torn land, where the group leader would tell stories to distract the other children.

Set in the round, with the audience sat on hay bales, with a large maypole in the middle of the space. Devised piece with ages 12-14, in response to South West folklore. The piece started in Kingsmead Square with an outside dance, before escorting the audience into The Egg. Featuring live music performed by members of the cast and Elian Showering.

Tristan Bernays’ 2017 Boudica. Performed by members aged 15-18. This piece required permission from parents to sign-up and a script sent prior to starting rehearsals. This was due to the themes and language. There was a battle scene and a lot of blood, rehearsed over two-terms

Summer Company 2018. Original script, set in a modern day fun fair in the round. Featuring a swing, confetti cannons and a roller disco moment.

Intergenerational new writing festival, with over two-hundred writers and performers aged 5-80. Co-produced alongside the Engage producer and performed over two weeks on the same set.

Early-years Christmas show devised by a company of 12 young people aged 16-19. Performed seventy-two shows in the Roper Room, with a rotating cast and ASMs/Operators. Created separately to regular Theatre School sessions.

Summer Company 2017. Commissioned script, written by Miriam Battye. Directed by John East. Miriam's evocative play simultaneously honours Washington Irving’s original, dream-like story, whilst also astutely exploring the teenage angst and drama that accompany falling in love for the first time. Traditional Victorian dress, with a soundtrack of Arctic Monkeys and 00s indie-pop.

One of the big questions the cast has had to tackle is whether the characters they play are puppets or people. And if they are puppets, do they know? As well as the talent seen on stage, Theatre School members have been involved in making props, set, costume as well as taking on stage management, technical and lighting design roles.

Lucy Prebble’s Enron, that theatrically portrays the famous financial crash of the Enron Corporation. Performed by members aged 16-19. This piece required permission from parents to sign-up and a script sent prior to starting rehearsals. This was due to the themes and language. Featuring dinosaur heads, cheerleaders and a dance to Whigfield’s ‘Saturday Night’.

Devised piece with ages 14-16. Future world where the South West leaves the UK in a ‘Wexit’. Merry Berry is seen as a symbol of abundance and prosperity.

A backstage, theatrical ghost tour of the Main House. Performed at midnight with two audiences being taken round in reverse order, with head torches on. Performed by ages 11-13.

Summer Company August 2016 (the first Summer Company). The Egg was flat-floored and turfed in real grass. Audiences sat on Victorian rugs and garden furniture. The script was written by a young person, mentored by a professional writer. Sherlock was portrayed as a woman, who was in a relationship with a female Watson.

Promenade adaptation of Antigone, directed and adapted by Greg Banks. Featuring live music and a large chorus. Performed by members aged 14-16. The floor was painted to be a large chalkboard.

National Theatre Connections play, set in soviet Russia and the future, a musical satire with music by Gary Kemp (Spandau Ballet) and Guy Pratt (Pink Floyd). Musically Directed by Rob Hiley. Performed at The Egg, before being chosen to be performed at the festival at The National, where we took a young person company to London for three days.
