Theatre School ‘Otherworlds’ Festival: Writing Competition
Inviting young writers aged 12 – 19 to submit a short play exploring the science fiction genre. Three plays will be selected to be directed and performed by professional actors in a rehearsed reading at The Egg Theatre.
What are we looking for
Specification:
Your play must comply with the below requirements
Must be an original piece of writing. But could be an adaptation or a retelling of an existing story as long as the words are your own.
Minimum 10 pages - maximum 20 pages.
Maximum 5 characters - monologues will also be accepted.
Formatting: the play can be submitted over email in either a word document or a PDF. Pages should be numbered.
Plays must include a cover page with the following: full name of writer, age, name of play, number of characters, if the play was inspired by another piece of writing please mention this here too.
Who is the competition open to
Writers must be between the ages 0f 12 - 19 yrs.
Writers must be South West based.
You don't have to currently be enrolled in a Theatre School group
The play should in some way explore the science fiction genre – this could mean many different things, see a list of tips about writing sci-fi from Writer/director Steph Kempson below.
The Winning Plays
The winners:
Three plays will be announced as the winners and chosen for development and performance.
Mentoring:
Throughout February and March the winning writers will work with a writing mentor. Receiving feedback and developing their writing for the stage. This will take the shape of two mentoring sessions. Times and dates will be decided with the winning writers.
Performance:
The three chosen plays will be performed as part of our ‘Otherworlds’ festival in April in a rehearsed reading. The performance will take place in one of the TRB auditoria (TBC) and will be directed and performed by industry professionals.
Writers will be invited into the rehearsal room to see their work in rehearsal. There will be space for input and feedback.
Time line and how to submit
Submissions open: 18/12/2024
Submissions deadline: 01/03/2025 (midnight)
Mentoring sessions: two sessions March and April
Rehearsal and performances: W/c 7th April (TBC).
